The United Nations' Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture and Other Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), on Thursday, elected Supreme Court Justice Shujune Muhammad for the term of 2021 to 2024.
Justice Shujune won against 19 candidates that vied for the 12 seats on the Committee and is the third instance she had secured the seat after she was initially elected to the Committee in 2010.
She is the first Maldivian elected to a UN Treaty Body, and was on the Subcommittee for two consecutive terms between 2011 and 2018, where she served as the Rapporteur and the Vice-Chair on Jurisprudence, respectively.
Maldives was one of the original twenty nations party to the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), The UN SPT is the largest human rights treaty body of the United Nations consisting of 25 independent experts.
