Ministry of Defence on Tuesday held discussions with relevant authorities to place fire hydrant systems across Majeedhee Magu, the major street which bisects capital city Male'.

The Defence Ministry held the meeting with officials of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Male' City Council, and the technical staff of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Discussions to place fire hydrant systems across Majeedhee Magu were held previously as well during the reconstruction of the major road in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.

Former Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu on September 22 revealed that the previous administration had established necessary plumbing for the placement of the fire hydrants during reconstruction.

A large number of the public levelled criticism and scrutiny, raising queries regarding the lack of availability of fire safety equipment, following the major fire incident that occurred last Friday in Henveiru ward of capital Male'.

In face of the scrutiny, Muizzu asserted that relevant authorities must investigate the reasons why the fire safety equipment was not made available despite the prior established plumbing system.

However, Male' City Mayor Shifa Mohamed revealed that while MNDF made payments to Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC), the system was incomplete.

She elaborated that the currently established plumbing on Majeedhee Magu was not adequate to set up fire hydrant systems.

The Mayor asserted that the city council is currently working to solve infrastructural issues in the capital.
