Maldives Medical Association (MMA) has voiced concerns about the incidences where photos and details of doctors are being circulated on social media, alongside posts defaming them.
In a statement released by the association, they highlighted that some individuals are circulating on social media photos of, and baseless rumours regarding, technical experts of the medical field, especially doctors, in a manner detrimental to the service, and in a way that would erode the trust the public places in the health services.
The association asserted that the spread of unfounded rumours would most cause the most serious negative impact to members of the public who are in need of the health services in question.
They went on to say that acts of eroding public trust in the health system contributed to the unnecessary costs and inconvenient culture of promoting travelling abroad to seek medical services that are, in fact, locally available.
MMA stated that health sector professionals in the Maldives work while facing many challenges, and that acts such as these affect them negatively, and make it more difficult to retain good, qualified, professionals in the service.
