Ruling coalition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) has announced that they will be submitting the case of the altercation in the parliament today to the concerned authorities.

Clashes arose in the parliament today after the ruling coalition MPs decided to disrupt parliament proceedings following opposition parties' decision to not endorse some members of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet.

The most serious physical altercation occurred between Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa and Kanditheemu MP Abdulla Shaheem.

In a statement released by PPM, the party alleged that MDP affiliated MPs had physically assaulted members of the coalition, resulting in one MP sustaining head injuries.

"It is absolutely unacceptable that as this was ongoing, the Parliament Speaker not only failed to intervene and put a stop to this, but actively encouraged [the altercation]. We call on the parliament to ensure the safety of MPs and to not allow unrest in the parliament," the statement reads.

The statement confirmed that the coalition is in the process of submitting the case to relevant institutions for further investigation and review.
