The platform used for geo-technical work of the Thilamale' bridge has been refloated, nearly two weeks after it wrecked on the reef of Vilimale'.

The project's contractor; Afcons infrastructure, had previously said it would refloat the platform on Wednesday. However, due to bad weather, the work could not be carried out.

Director General of Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Ibrahim Naeem told Mihaaru News that the work was completed around 10 am, August 27.

"Work is underway to remove iron and other debris from the reef floor," he said.

According to him a survey will also be launched to investigate the damages caused to the reef as soon as the cleanup is complete.

Naeem said that if the weather improves the survey will be completed within 24 hours.

Refloating the platform came with many challenges as the platform's pillars were stuck to the reef due to the extended time elapsed since it's wreck.

Environmental organizations have expressed growing concern over the damage caused to the reef.

Minister of National Planning and Housing Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has stated that there will be no delay in the Thilamale' Bridge work due to the platform incident. He said that the work on the bridge would be carried out expeditiously.
