Maldives Immigration has announced that six foreigners working illegally were detained during last night's raid on local market areas in Male'. They said that the special operation to identify and take action against expatriates working illegally will continue.

The market where the six were detained last night was also raided earlier last week. The stalls had been closed for a time after multiple foreigners running stalls were taken into detention. However, the stalls resumed business again with other expatriates being brought in to run them.

In a social media post today, Immigration said that under the operation to identify expatriates illegally conducting small and medium enterprises in the Maldives, two market areas were raided even last night.

Two foreign men and two foreign women were detained in last night's operation.

"These operations will continue without halt even in the future," they said.

Under the larger operation begun on June 29, 50 expatriates have now been detained.

Last week, all expatriates running stalls in a market located on Majeedhee Magu near Villa Mart, and in a market on Ameenee Magu were taken into custody by Immigration. The stalls remained closed after the expatriates were taken into custody. However, the next day, different expatriates were seen operating these stalls once again. Last night's operation was also conducted at these two locations.

Once documentation is completed, the expatriates currently in custody will be deported, Immigration has earlier said.
