Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said they will open the new sea plane terminal before 2021 is over.

The company spent USD 55 million (MVR 849 million) to develop the now completed terminal. MACL did not provide an answer when Mihaaru asked why there was such a delay in opening the seaplane terminal.

Mihaaru reported that the terminal was completed two months ago.

However, MACL have previously attempted to start operations by various dates.

The seaplane terminal's building has four storeys. MACL said four operators can use the terminal fully without facing difficulties. Currently seaplane services are provided in Maldives by three operators; Trans Maldivian Airways, Island Aviation, and Manta Airways.

The seaplane terminal was one of the core projects undertaken while developing Velana International Airport. As the new runway can be used only after current seaplane terminal is vacated, opening of the new terminal is delayed over the seaplane terminal being delayed.
