Ministry of Higher Education, on Monday, revealed that 64 percent of individuals seeking higher education through colleges and other educational institutions were women.
According to the ministry's statistics for 2019, a total of 13,999 students were registered through 843 programmes, with a majority of students undertaking studies within the fields of business administration, law, education, and arts and humanities.
The students were also predominantly enrolled in degree and certificate level 4 courses.
Moreover, figures indicated that from the sum of men enrolled in the courses, only 37 percent graduated.
A total of 12 educational facilities are registered at the ministry, from which the majority of students are enrolled at the Maldives National University (MNU), which comprises 26 percent of the student pool.
The statistics were released as a publication titled 'Annual Higher Education Statistics' through an online ceremony hosted by the ministry and launched by the chief guest, Minister of Tourism Dr Abdulla Mausoom, and Minister of Higher Education Dr Ibrahim Hassan.
As a result of the financial repercussions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the higher education ministry previously announced that government-sponsored student loan payments would be deferred until the end of 2020.
On August 12, the ministry also disclosed that over MVR 340 million was spent on providing opportunities for higher education, from November 2018 till date.
