Media Director for Parliament Hassan Ziyau revealed on Thursday that Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) started to provide security detail for five Parliamentarians upon request, reported local media Mihaaru.
However, he did not disclose the identity of the five MPs receiving MNDF security.
Mihaaru further relayed that the armed authorities placed the MPs under protective detail due to a group intimidating and threatening the lawmakers.
"We submitted the complaints to MNDF upon being informed by the Parliamentarians. They are currently providing the members with security after conducting necessary assessments", said Ziyau.
This marks the first instance of security being provided for members of the 19th sitting of Parliament.
However, there were several instances of MPs requiring security detail in prior sittings of Parliament. The Presidential Commission on Murder and Enforced Disappearance have previously declared that perpetrators behind death threats targeting certain MPs were formerly uncovered in prior investigations.
