Island Aviation Services (IAS) announced its decision to introduce night flights to Thimarafushi Domestic Airport, on Monday.

IAS will hold a ceremony to inaugurate the additional services at the airport located in Thaa Atoll.

The installation of lights along the airport runway had been completed earlier. However, IAS has yet to land a flight at the airport at night.

Thimarafushi Domestic Airport was inaugurated by Former President Mohamed Waheed Hassan on September 3, 2013.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) was initially awarded the contract to develop Thimarafushi Domestic Airport with a runway measuring 1,200-metres in length and 30-metres across.

MACL had subcontracted the project to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for MVR 32 million in May 2012. The airport is operated by IAS, which also manages the national airline of Maldives.
