The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the Maldives has fined a vessel that capsized on Kudagiri reef near Thilafushi in Kaafu atoll.
The boat named "AM MSV Maria Sinthathiyarai Riyana" capsized on January 31. The EPA fined the vessel a total of MVR 3,098,710, and they are expected to pay the amount within 30 days.
The agency said on Monday that the survey report shared by the vessel’s owner showed nearly an area of 130 square meters of the reef sustained various degrees of damage after the boat capsized.
EPA has previously fined several vessels by millions for similar incidents, but in most instances, these fines remain largely unpaid.
The Maldives, with its extensive coral reefs, is particularly sensitive to environmental damage caused by shipping accidents. The country has taken measures to protect its reefs, including the creation of protected marine areas and imposing fines on individuals and companies that damage them.
