Mega infrastructural projects by the previous administration was often scrutinized by the current ruling party. However, upon coming to power in 2018, the incumbent administration has continually doubled down on mass 'ecocide', in violation of the electoral pledges by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The state, on Friday, discontinued leasing land from Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi to review the terms and conditions of leasing land from the islands.

According to a statement by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), that land leasing for temporary use had also been put on hold for the time being, since solving the issues with land that had already been leased was currently in progress.

HDC stated that the company will resume leasing land after concluding the necessary steps required before the process can continue.

The company is working on making the necessary changes that need to be brought in developing the Greater Male’ Area, consisting of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’, industrial island Thilafushi, newly reclaimed Gulhifalhu and capital Male’, with the merging of HDC and Greater Male’ Industrial Zone (GMIZ).

GMIZ was established in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration to oversee the operations of Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu. The company was merged with HDC, tasked with overseeing Hulhumale’s operations, in September 2020.

Although land was leased from reclaimed land in Gulhifalhu during Mohamed Nasheed’s presidency, the flats built on the island were taken as government property in Yameen’s administration, after concluding that the flats did not provide adequate living conditions.

The current administration is carrying out a large project to relocate the Male’ Port to Gulhifalhu.
