Criminal Court sentenced four men to two years in jail on Sunday over attempting to steal MVR 4.2 million from the Root shop in Male’, Maldives.
Root’s staff had set out to deposit money in Bank of Ceylon in October of 2020, when a group of men in motorcycles attempted to steal the money. The heist was stopped by the bank’s security guard.
The state had pressed charges against Abdulla Raashid from Laamu Gan, Mohamed Musab Zubair from Gaafu Alif Vilingili, Husain Abdul Majeed from Male’, and Ahmed Ameer, also from Male’.
Even though all four of them had denied the charges at first, they had later pleaded guilty in court.
In the court ruling, it was stated while the punishment for a robbery is a jail sentence of three years and two months, they have received a shorter sentence of two years, four months, and 24 days as stated in the penal code since they have pleaded guilty against the charges. Judge Hassan Saeed that had made this ruling said, after counting the time they had already spent in prison, they now have to serve a sentence of one year and one month in prison.
