No difficulty in repaying debt: Finance Minister

Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer said he has no intention of consulting debt relief with any party since there is no difficulty in repaying.

Replying to questions raised by members of Parliament, Ameer said Maldives has always paid its debts within the stipulated period. He said that the country is not facing any difficulties in repaying its debt.

"Maldives has been servicing its debt regularly for a long time. It has never defaulted. Therefore, we do not expect a situation of default to arise in the future," he said.

According to the latest statistical figures from the Finance Ministry, the government debt stood at MVR 100 billion, and MVR 2.1 billion spent on debt repayment so far this this year. A total of MVR 2.9 billion will be spent this year as debt repayment.

The state debt is expected to reach MVR 103 billion by the end of 2022. According to the latest statistics, state debt is expect to rise higher than what Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) had forecasted.
