A large hospital specializing in thalassemia treatment, inclusive of general healthcare services, will be developed in Hulhumale's second phase.

During the ceremony to initiate the National Thalassemia Campaign, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel announced that a 71,000 square feet land plot in Hulhumale' 2 has been acquired for the establishment of this hospital.

He said that the state is working to commence the construction of the hospital this year and highlighted that once the hospital is opened, thalassemia care within the country will see a positive improvement.

Minister Khaleel added that with the steady increase in the carrier population within the country, marriages between carriers will also increase, resulting in the rise of the thalassemia population. He highlighted that these patients require special care and psychological support and emphasized the importance of establishing a high-quality blood bank.

He added that, in order to integrate the facility with the community, the hospital must include a library and a play area, in addition to providing space where islanders can stay after traveling to Male’ for treatment.

“We are designing this place [hospital] to be very comprehensive. Observing the current hospitals in the country, despite Dharumavantha Hospital being built to 25 stories, the facility is still very crowded, and additional services have also been introduced. This [new] hospital is also being designed for a specific purpose with new services. It is clear that Phase 2 needs a hospital,” Khaleel said.

“A large population of about 30,000-40,000 people reside there. However, the only hospitals that cater to the population of Hulhumale' are Treetop Hospital and Hulhumale' Hospital. Hulhumale' Hospital also requires redevelopment. Therefore, a better hospital in comparison needs to be built in Phase 2. Despite specializing in Thalassemia care, general illness will also be treated there. All features of a general hospital will be available from this facility.”

Under the national campaign launched by the Health Ministry, the entire Maldivian population will undergo Thalassemia screening within a five-year period. The aim is to reduce the birth of transfusion-dependent thalassemics by 50 percent within the next 10 years.
