Police have launched a probe into the suspicious death of an infant in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll.

Police spokesperson on Monday confirmed the investigation into the death of a 19-day old girl in Ihavandhoo, but did not provide further details.

According to local media Mihaaru, an island councillor revealed that the infant's parents had put her to sleep between them, after feeding her around 0530 hours.

"They realised around 7:20 in the morning that she did not appear to be moving, and found she was bleeding from the nose," said the councillor.

"When they rushed her to the health centre, the doctor pronounced it was a natural death."

The councillor further shared that the infant did not have any signs of physical injuries, and that she was taken to the doctor the night before due to a fever.

The infant was the younger of two siblings.
