The Maldives government authorised Tuesday three institutes to train boat captains, crew members and mechanics.

The economic ministry stated that majority of dangerous accidents at sea occur due to lack of adequate training of sea captains and crew. In a move to provide proper local maritime training to marine staff, the ministry added it was currently working to approve more institutions for the cause.

Maldives Transport Authority will approve the institutions’ curriculum, which will be taught by certified veterans of the field.

“Though the institutions will provide mobile training, they will be operated under meticulous policies and will be audited by the Transport Authority,” stated the ministry.

The economic ministry noted that the mobile training system of the institutions offers the opportunity to provide their local maritime training in various islands and resorts. Thus, sea captains and crew members can easily participate in the programme from across the Maldives.

The Maldives’ maritime security regulations were recently amended to stipulate that all crew members working on marine vessels must be license holders beginning next January.
