STELCO (State Electric Company Limited) has responded to allegations made by former President Abdulla Yameen regarding its billing practices.

In a statement issued yesterday, STELCO refuted Yameen's claims, asserting that the company adheres strictly to regulations in taking meter readings and billing households. The company said that its employees work around the clock to generate and supply electricity, with staff visiting households monthly to take meter readings, prepare bills, and ensure timely delivery of services.

STELCO said that it operates within a strict regulatory framework and does not violate these rules.

"We assure the public that the company will not act in violation of these regulations," the statement read.

STELCO added that it condemned the spread of misinformation aimed at undermining public confidence in the company.

"The company's employees, who are also customers, receive bills based on the same readings and billing procedures as other households," STELCO said.

The company further added that no household is billed without a meter reading and invited all relevant authorities to verify the adherence to regulations in their billing process.

At a People's National Front (PNF) meeting last Thursday, Yameen had claimed that STELCO had stopped visiting households to take meter readings and was unfairly distributing the annual increase in electricity consumption in Male' to household bills, calling for the matter to be taken to court.
