Police on Wednesday arrested the captain and four crew members of the fishing boat which got into a marine accident with a speedboat, injuring 14 people.

The speedboat, from Summer Island Resort, had crashed into the fishing boat which was anchored near One and Only Reethi Rah resort in Kaafu atoll. According to MNDF, the fishing boat did not have its navigation lights on and, thus, the captain of the speedboat had not seen the boat in time.

Police spokesperson announced that the fishing boat's captain has been remanded for ten days. Meanwhile, Police are working to hand over the four crew members, who are foreigners, to Immigration.

The spokesperson disclosed that the captain and crew had fled immediately after the accident occurred, which is one of the main reasons for arresting the captain. The official added that, besides the navigation lights, the captain had not taken other mandatory safety measures aboard the fishing boat as well.

Fourteen people aboard the speedboat were injured in this accident and were taken to ADK Hospital in capital Male. According to ADK's Managing Director Ahmed Afaal, four people are still being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while the hospital has since discharged seven of the injured. Two people are in serious condition with internal damages. One of them suffered a serious head injury and has undergone surgery.
