President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that the previous administration had entrusted many projects in rural islands in the run-up to the presidential elections without a budget or plan to do so.
Speaking to the people of Gaadhiffushi this afternoon as the final destination of his visit to Thaa Atoll, the President said that since July, a number of projects have been awarded to the companies at a very fast pace. However, many projects have also been stalled, he said.
The President said developing a harbour in Gaadhiffushi, which is the main problem for the island, was entrusted to Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC). However, work on this project has not gone forward.
He said many projects were awarded to companies in a similar manner in a number of islands preceding the presidential elections without a plan or a budget.
"When it was handed over like that, the project did not proceed. There is no money to give, when the bills are raised. And the companies are not prepared to do it [the project],” the President said.
He said that such important projects, which are required to be done for the people, have been awarded without any integrity and it is the people that suffer the losses because of this.
He assured that such things will not happen under the present government.
"On the other hand, honesty will take precedence, you will see integrity from us,” he said.
He said that the government will look into the problems faced by MTCC in carrying out the Gadhiffushi harbour project and ensure the project is completed.
Stating that the development of the island's school is what is most important for the island, he said that that will be what he will focus on for the island.
He also said that he would do as promised and reclaim land for Gaadhiffushi alongside the work conducted to develop the Guraidhoo airport.
