If you and your family like travelling but are concerned about the environmental, social, and economic consequences, it's time to take a more environmentally friendly approach to your vacations. There are eco-friendly vacation spots that offer the chance to experience a family trip while reducing the environmental impact. A sustainably sound trip could create more meaningful experiences with the chance of learning something new about the environment every day. Five spots that can be considered for an experience as such are as follows.

Wales

Wales, despite its modest size, packs a big punch in terms of kid-friendly activities. Camping in one of Pembrokeshire's many green campsites, or heading north to Powys' Centre for Alternative Technology, where kids can learn about sustainable living while having fun are two options. A ride on the world's only people-powered rollercoaster at Snowdonia's eco-friendly Greenwood Forest Park is another memorable experience to be had.

Fiji

Staying in a village homestay in Fiji is a great way to get away from the resorts and cruise ships. Children will learn about Fijian culture, and money spent will benefit the community directly. Older children can volunteer with a recognized organization for both marine conservation and community work. If staying in a resort, choosing a resort similar to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, allows guests to participate in coral planting.

South Africa

South Africa, as a country with a long history of responsible tourism, offers a plethora of possibilities to sustainably explore its magnificent culture and environment. It's also great for families, with convenient animal watching (and many reserves offer volunteer opportunities) and a variety of experiences and landscapes to discover. Fair Trade Tourism is a good place to start looking for an ethical operator in South Africa.

Thailand

The land of smiles is another great spot that offers a lot to its visitors. Children can see a different side of Thailand while minimizing the family's impact at the wonderful environment of Khao Sok National Park. Booking community-focused lodges and hiring a local guide to show you around the interesting flora and fauna is one way to be in the heart of the community. On Chiaw Lan Lake, you can even spend the night in a rustic raft house, which means you won't have access to electricity for the duration of your visit. The Anurak Lodge's eco-friendly rafting, cycling, swimming, and hiking will appeal to active families.

Tasmania

For families, Tasmania is a lovely destination. From the family-friendly "Discovery Ranger" activities available in the national parks, take treetop walks, play around in boats, to frolicking on the sand, Tasmania offers plenty to keep everyone satisfied, and the distances are modest. There's also a heavy emphasis on using locally sourced, tasty ingredients, as well as a long-term commitment to wildlife conservation and wilderness preservation.
