The parliament, on Monday, approved a motion of no confidence against Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal.

Out of 70 parliamentarians that attended the session, 59 voted in favour of the motion, while only one member voted against and four abstained.

This marks the first instance of a no-confidence motion against a cabinet minister since the election of the incumbent administration.

The motion was initially proposed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the party’s parliamentary group in November 2020.

Following its approval, MDP parliamentary group leader and Henveiru Central MP Ali Azim submitted the no-confidence motion to the parliament.

Despite MDP's attempt to seek approval from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, he has yet to reveal his decision on the censure motion submitted against the Communications Minister.

For years, Maldivians have been demanding cheaper and faster internet services. Prices in the heavily technology-dependent nation are hefty compared to other countries in the same region, leading to constant criticism from the public.

Maleeh has claimed that the communications ministry has concluded its tasks to reduce the price of internet and forwarded the documents to PO. The office has yet to make any comment on the matter.

The approval ratings for Maleeh, appointed to the joint-coalition cabinet on Jumhooree Party’s slot, has been low since the beginning and fell even lower during the past two years.
