The government on Wednesday awarded the projects to establish water supply systems in two islands and sewerage systems in four islands to contractors.
Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and top representatives of the companies signed the agreements at a ceremony held at the ministry. Water supply systems are to be established in the islands of Eydhafushi in Baa atoll and Vilufushi in Thaa atoll, while sewerage systems are to be established in the islands of Maarandhoo and Muraidhoo in Haa Alif atoll, Maalhos in Baa atoll and Dhigurah in Alif Dhaal atoll.
The project to establish water supply systems in Eydhafushi and Vilufushi costs MVR 74.3 million which will be funded by the government and a loan from OPEC Fund for International Development. According to the Environment Ministry, a water supply network spanning 15 kilometres and a 192 ton RO plant will be established in Eydhafushi under this project.
The water supply venture is to be completed within seven months of signing the agreement.
The ministry awarded the design and survey of the sewerage systems to be established in Muraidhoo, Maarandhoo and Maalhos to Shah Technical Consultants Pvt Ltd for over MVR 800,000. The designs and surveys are to be completed within six months of signing the agreement.
Meanwhile, the water and sewerage system of Dhigurah is awarded to Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) to be completed under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) program.
