President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to be a responsible opposition movement as they are set to become the opposition party once he is sworn in on November 17.

Dr. Muizzu, who secured victory over MDP candidate and incumbent president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih with a lead of over 19,000 votes in the presidential election held on Saturday, September 30, made this statement at a celebratory gathering held at the Social Centre last night.

Addressing the public for the first time since his election, Dr. Muizzu expressed his desire for MDP to be prepared to function as a responsible opposition party and welcomed this prospect. He emphasized the importance of a responsible opposition, and said that such a party would play a critical role in criticizing the government and bringing forth better policies for the people compared to the government's policies.

However, Dr. Muizzu also noted that in times of adversity, a responsible opposition would unite for the benefit of the country.

"I ask you to follow that approach. The place I am most familiar with, both for me and MDP, is the UK, where I lived for 8 years. In the UK, you can observe how such a system works. Hence, I would like MDP to function as a responsible opposition," he said.

Dr. Muizzu said that only by adhering to this approach can the stability desired by Maldivians be achieved. He said that over 200,000 people voted in this election because they desired a presidential system, and this is what Maldivians want.

"People in this country don't want inconsistent messages. Hopefully, the country will continue in this direction," he said.
