The two generators in Vandhoo, Thaa Atoll, broke down on Sunday and the island is still without electricity, reported the island council.

According to Council President Mohamed Giyas, the island lost power on Sunday morning, adding that he is unsure when the two generators can be repaired.

Vandhoo’s electricity is provided by state utilities company Fenaka Corporation Pvt Ltd. Giyas stated that he has since informed Fenaka over the matter.

“We informed relevant authorities and Fenaka regarding issues in electricity prior to Ramadan”, said Giyas.

He further stated that as a response, the authorities claimed that the matter was currently under investigation and will be solved within a week.

As per the council, there are no ways to provide electricity for the island with a population of approximately 400 residents.

While noting that electricity is often utilized to a greater extent during the ongoing Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, Giyas brought to attention the difficulties the islanders have faced since the generators went out of order.

On occasion, multiple islands face electricity shortages across the Maldives. As such, during April, the island of Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, faced electricity outages.

Fenaka provides electricity for both of these islands.
