Will submit amendment to grant portion of tax earnings to councils: President

Assuring that amendments to the constitution will be brought to ensure additional income for local councils through tax, the President urged that a majority of the parliament is essential to facilitate this change.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the required amendments will be brought to the constitution in order to arrange the direct provision of a portion of tax income generated by the state to the councils.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Vaavu atoll Keyodhoo, the President maintained that this administration's policy is encircled around the inclusivity of councils and facilitating change for islands through the councils.

He stated that ways to increase the income for councils will be sought under this policy.

“I intend to amend the decentralization act and tourism act to add a determined portion of GST acquired through local guests houses and tourism to the council’s income,” the President said.

“This will allow further funds to be generated into councils’ income.”

He had further assured that income will be generated for the council through fisheries and agriculture, in addition to tourism as well.

“Will bring amendments to structure the Constitution in a way that facilitates Councils to directly receive a portion of income generated by MIRA (Maldives Inland Revenue Authority).” President said.

He had affirmed that, with the implementation of this amendment, the councils will be provided with a path to address the developments needed for islands on their own budget without fully depending on the State.

“This will allow councils to address the needs of the people with the counsel of the government to a much better extent,” said the President.

However, the President stated that these amendments to the Constitution can only be proceeded once the State secures the majority of the parliament and expressed hope that the people will make this possible.

“The citizens are receiving a golden opportunity to elect a parliament that supports the government in these such matters,” the President said.
