National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on Sunday, that they have received over MVR 2.5 million to the disaster relief fund established in the wake of Henveyru Ward fire in September.
The relief fund was closed at 1600 hrs on Sunday and NDMA revealed that the exact amount can be rounded up at MVR 2,528,833.37.
A massive fire broke havoc in Henveyru Ward on September 20, displacing hundreds from their homes in what officials describe as the most horrific fire incident to happen in recent times. The bulk of victims have since been moved to permanent housing, while some still remain in temporary accommodations provided by the authorities.
The fire that took ablaze in a warehouse nestled in the narrow 'Abadhah Fehi Magu', quickly spread to the buildings in the vicinity, taking down 14 homes and six warehouses in total. Six houses were damaged beyond repair and authorities demolished three buildings having identified them as public safety hazards.
A large number of civilian volunteers mobilised and were active throughout and following the incident in relief efforts to provide aid to the displaced individuals. Local businesses and other organisations made hefty contributions in food, water and other necessities.
Following the fire in Henveyru Ward, public discourse over the storage of chemicals in residential areas increased as people took to social media demanding for action. State has since taken account of all existing warehouses, deciding to relocate them outside the city to the isolated island of Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
