A no-confidence motion against parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem has been submitted by government-affiliated parliamentarians.

People's National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group leader and minority leader of the parliament Moosa Siraj said that a no-confidence motion against Speaker Aslam has been submitted to the parliament. In addition to the Speaker, a no-confidence motion has also been submitted against Deputy Speaker Saleem with the signature of 23 parliamentarians.

The no-confidence motion against Speaker Aslam was submitted by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and PNC coalition after clashes broke out in the parliament following the decision of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats to not approve some members of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet.

While MDP and The Democrats currently have 57 parliamentarians, there are a total of 30 government-affiliated members in parliament.

MDP parliamentary group has decided not to approve Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development Dr. Ali Haidar, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.

The Democrats, who are now working with MDP in the parliament, have also decided not to approve Ahmed Usham, Dr. Ali Haidar, and Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed. In addition, The Democrats have also decided not to approve Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer.

The two parties also have the intention not to grant approval for Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works Adam Shareef and Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal. However, a final decision has not been taken on the matter so far.

The reasons for not granting approval for some Ministers included the withholding of land allocated to the people of Malé City and deteriorating relations with India. In a statement, the ruling PPM and PNC coalition have said that denying parliamentary approval to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet will be tantamount to obstructing the services the government provides to citizens.
