The legal team of murdered blogger Yameen Rasheed on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against Maldives Police Service at the Civil Court over neglecting to provide security and protection for Yameen despite his reports of receiving several death threats before he was killed.

Speaking at a press conference accompanied by Yameen’s father Hussain Rasheed, former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood proclaimed that Yameen had been receiving death threats since seven years ago and that it was officially reported to Police in 2014 and last December as well. However, he stressed that no protection was provided nor any investigations carried out regarding the matter.

“Several threats were recently on social media which also tagged Police and other authorities. But none was investigated,” added Husnu Al Suood.

He declared that the lawsuit was to prove that Yameen was murdered as a result of Police's failure to provide security and protection.

Meanwhile, Police have previously commented that they had carried out some investigations into the death threats and interrogated individuals regarding the matter.

Suood reiterated that it is the duty of Maldives Police Service to ensure the security of any Maldivian citizen upon request, which they had failed to do so in Yameen’s case.

So far, Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the high profile murder case.
