Sustainable tourism seeks to provide people with an exciting and educational holiday that is also of benefit to the people of the host country and does not damage the local environment or society.

Travellers are constantly seeking the very best tourism products from across the world, and as Maldives is now the World’s leading Destination this shows that the tourism sector recovers and the appetite for travel has never been greater.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation defines sustainable tourism as tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future. Rather than being a type of product, it is an ethos that underpins all tourism activities. As such, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island's renowned eco-consciousness and sleek design extend to the island’s 15 over-water residences taps into the Maldives’ favourable climate conditions, ideally allowing for plenty of natural light.

Ideally located off one of the Maldives’ little tropical islands, the luxury resort’s main structure has an extensive roof built from solar panels arranged into a stepped pattern.

New York City architecture firm Yuji Yamazaki Architecture (YYA) designed the $3,000-plus a night resort as a luxury eco-friendly getaway where the complex structure can sustain itself and its photovoltaic roof efficiently generates enough energy to power the entire resort.

YYA wanted to celebrate the technology. For this, they didn’t mask the panels. Instead, they put them front and center as a design feature. So, visitors understand how they power the resort. “At an appealing glance, guests can assess the size of the solar roof, and then comprehend the relationship to the scale of the resort served by it,” the principal architects explain.

According to the designers, the structure’s shape and angle were explicitly designed to capture sunlight. Also, to generate the maximum amount of energy. Meanwhile, slits in between the rows of panels allow air and natural light to filter through It further reduces electricity costs.

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island opened 1st December 2018 and has been recognised as a leading example of eco-friendly resorts in the Maldives.
