COVID-19: 734 cases in 24 hrs, HPA announces curfew for Greater Male Area

With the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced the Greater Male' Area to be put under curfew from 2100hrs to 0400 hours.

This curfew will go into effect May 6, Thursday eveining.

The spike in the COVID have lead to an alarming trend where the number of people testing positive has been a setting a new record every day for the past week.

The statistics released by HPA on Wednesday showed that within the past twenty four hours, 734 people tested positive for COVID, out of which 540 people were from Male' Area alone. From the islands, 186 people tested positive while seven people from resorts and a single person from an industrial island.

During the curfew hours, it is not allowed to go outside either on foot or on vehicles, unless special permit is obtained.

The police will ensure delivery service providers get the required permits, HPA said.

Previously, HPA had announced prohibition of vehicular movement from 0000hrs to 0400hrs, from May 4, Tuesday evening.

To control the current spread of COVID, multiple steps are being taken by the authorities, including travel restrictions.
