Mohamed Visam, who is convicted of murdering Ahmed Aruham of Haa Alif Hoarafushi island in 2012, has appealed the Criminal Court’s sentence of capital punishment at the High Court.

Aruham was killed in a gang fight with sharp weapons in June 2012 in capital Male. The Criminal Court had charged Visam guilty of murder and put him on the death row last September. The state had also prosecuted three others in the case, but their charges were not proven.

The High Court accepted Visam’s appeal last Monday but has yet to begin the appeal process.

If Visam had not appealed his case, the state would have taken the case to High Court for a second ruling on the verdict.

According to the Maldives’ regulations on death penalty, capital punishment will be implemented only if the Supreme Court upholds the final verdict and none of the victim’s inheritors forgives the culprits. The Supreme Court has so far put three men on the death row though it remains unclear when the executions will take place.
