Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), on Wednesday, announced that efforts were underway to conclude construction work on Hoarafushi Airport in Haa Alif Atoll by Sunday.

According to MTCC, construction work on 84 percent of the airport is now complete, including 99 percent of the runway, 75 percent of the terminal building and 50 percent of the fire station.

The company’s CEO Adam Azim visited Hoarafushi on Wednesday, to personally oversee the progress of the Hoarafushi Airport project, described as one most important ventures currently undertaken by MTCC.

In order to develop the airport, 842,000 cubic meters of land was reclaimed from the island’s lagoon in 2019.

Upon completion, the airport will feature a runway of 1,200 meters as well as an apron of 8,635 square meters, including a taxiway.

The airport will also be equipped with a parking area of 9473 square feet, a fire access road of 1,718 square feet and an airport security and beach fence of 720 meters.

MTCC speculated that the cost of completing the project will total MVR 198 million.
