Member of former President Abdulla Yameen's legal team and his former deputy, Dr Mohamed Jameel revealed Monday that Maldives Police Service issued a summons to the ex-president for questioning concerning other cases.

Dr Jameel claimed that as the summons was issued after Yameen's appeal trial commenced, it indicated that his charges were politically motivated and had no legal basis.

Criticising the incumbent government's performance over the past year, Jameel called for Yameen's release from imprisonment.

The former vice president did not disclose any further details concerning the cases for which Yameen is being summoned for.

In December 2019, the Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to five years in prison and a fine of USD 5 million, on money laundering charges concerning the embezzlement of MVR 3.3 billion from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Although Yameen appealed the verdict, the High Court denied his request to be released on bail or delay implementation of the sentence.
