As the new academic year commences in the Maldives after a month-and-a-half break, concerns have surfaced regarding a potential shortage of teachers in certain schools.
Despite the education ministry's assurances of sufficient staffing in all schools, some schools have announced to recruit teachers today.
Several major schools in the Greater Malé Region including Jamaluddin School, have recently posted job vacancies for teachers. These recruitment efforts extend beyond the capital region, as certain schools in the atolls have also initiated the process of hiring teachers. There are also reports of some schools requiring principals as well.
The education ministry has not issued an official statement on this issue.
According to the ministry, there are currently 6,516 local teachers and 1,843 foreign teachers working in schools across the country.
