Following amendments to the education sector retirement policy, stakeholders have presented a petition to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The petition was submitted on Sunday, October 30 bearing over 500 signatures of teachers and educators currently active in the Greater Male' region.

Amendments to the policy that attracted particular criticism is concerned with the pension policy. The changes dictate that educators retiring after 55 years of age, will receive their pension based on their original designation's salary and not based on the salary of the designation they retired on.

The petition highlights that while President Solih's administration fulfilled the pledge of increasing remuneration for educators, pensions do not fall under it.

At the time when the policy has been pushed for approval, several educators have served in the sector for over 40 years. However, the educators expressed concern over the recent policy change slicing their tenure down to 30 years, in accordance to the provisions in the framework.

Inclusion of specific parties under the pay framework, while excluding the rest is a contradiction to the framework's title and its implementation; the petition read.

Spearheads of the petition claimed their efforts will persist in ensuring equal inclusion of all civil servants in the education sector, instead of specific parties receiving the benefits. They viewed the recent policy change to be grossly unfair.
