Teachers have decided to go to court over the denial of promotions to teachers.

President of Teachers Association Ali Nazim had told Mihaaru news that in addition to the overtime allowance that is guaranteed under Employment Act has being limited for them, promotions have also been halted for teachers for a long period as well. However, as people that work in other professions have these rights, teachers have decided to go to court over the matter of their salaries.

Nazim said allowances given due to career advancements had been halted due to Covid-19 as well.

"Teachers for secondary grades kept teaching over the recent break as well. Overtime was limited though. It is given inconsistently in different months. They might say to clock in overtime hours after the 15th of the month. Even if [a teacher] works 60 hours, they might inform to clock in only 20 hours," Nazim said.

Even though teachers have decided to go to court over this matter, the government had previously said they will increase the salary of teachers in May. No further details had been disclosed over this matter though.
