Bank of Maldives (BML) announced the islands for their 'Fehi Project' launched earlier in June 2022.
The 'Fehi Project' was introduced as part of the bank's 40th anniversary monthly initiatives. This five-year project aims to provide 50,000 trees to "reforest and rejuvenate island land spaces" to five islands each year.
The winning islands for the year 2022 are;
01. Noonu atoll Maafaru
02. Lhaviyani atoll Hinnavaru
03. Meemu atoll Dhiggaru
04. Thaa atoll Guraidhoo
05. Gaaf Dhaal atoll Gadhdhoo
The national bank aims to provide 10,000 plants, sourced from local nurseries to each winning island. According to BML, the project will "help to accelerate the much-needed establishment of healthy vegetation on the islands while simultaneously creating positive social impact for communities."
Reforestation will provide added benefits such as prevention of soil erosion, reducing temperatures, offsetting carbon emission and "ultimately providing a healthier climate."
The BML Fehi Project was open exclusively for Island and City Councils.
