Bank of Maldives on Monday introduced cashless payments for taxis, allowing drivers to accept contactless payment via the bank's digital wallet 'BML MobilePay'.

The bank stated that customers can use BML MobilePay to scan the QR code on drivers' mobile phones or displayed inside the taxi to make payments. The service is available for taxi drivers with BML's mPOS solution.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula launched the new service, which BML stated was part of the bank's endeavours to implement a cashless society.

Minister Nahula and BML’s CEO and Managing Director Tim Sawyer also donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hand sanitisers and face masks to taxi drivers after the inauguration.

BML announced that it will provide PPE packs to all taxis that register to the cashless payment service.

“We are pleased to play a leading role in providing the latest technology for payment solutions in the country. This solution enables customers to carry out transactions in an easy, fast and secure manner", said BML CEO and MD Tim Sawyer.

"During a time when cashless transactions are a way of life, we believe this modern means of payment will be popular with both our customers and taxi drivers. Our support for local community remains strong as we navigate these challenging times together".

BML MobilePay connects customers’ existing BML issued cards to the digital wallet, and acts as a secure payment method that does not require customers to give out card details. The app is available to download on the App Store or Google Play Store.
