Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Monday, warned against surging prices of taxi fares claiming it violates Ministry of Transport's regulations.

The authority's warning comes a day after news of taxi centers operating in the Greater Male' Region agreed for a price bump on fares.

Earlier, reports confirmed that a total of 14 taxi centers operating in the area convened to deliberate on hiking taxi fare prices in light of global oil price surges.

The surge in global oil prices has been reflected in the Maldivian market already with the State Trading Organization (STO) announcing revised prices of petrol and diesel available from sister company Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) outlets.

Recent updates from the international market confirm prices have gone up to USD112 per barrel on crude oil - an all-time high since 2014.

Meanwhile, the decision to bump prices on taxi fares according to the taxi centers reflects the price hike of oil, adding that the changes will numb down expenditure of maintenance and fuel.

However, Maldives Police Service noted that the taxi centers do not possess the legal authority of revising fare prices and that it is exclusively under the mandate of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

The authority warned of relevant action against any party found in violation of the ministry's existing regulation and approved fare prices.
