Maldives briefs UN on efforts to protect child rights

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid briefed the United Nations on Maldives' initiatives and achievements in protecting the rights of children, as per the government's reform agenda.

The discussion took place between the foreign minister and the Special Representative of UN Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, Dr Najat Maalla M’jid, during a meeting held Tuesday.

The minister noted that the administration is currently working to facilitate easier reporting of crimes and ways to expedite delivery of justice. He acknowledged the challenges faced in implementing the government's policies but assured Dr M'jid that Maldives remains committed to ensuring children's rights.

Minister Shahid further highlighted that Maldives reaffirmed the standing invitation to all Special Procedures Mandate Holders of the UN Human Rights Council, assuring that the government will implement all recommendations in accordance with the laws and policies of Maldives.

The special representative praised the government's efforts to protect child rights on the political and social arenas. She also hailed Maldives for ratifying the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a communications procedure, the Child Rights Protection Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, and assured that UN would continue to support the island nation's endeavours.
