A tourist in an unnamed resort tragically drowned and passed away after going snorkeling. Maldives is currently experiencing very rough weather with multiple weather alerts issued across different regions.
A Russian tourist who went snorkeling in a Kaafu atoll resort today has passed away from drowning.
The incident took place this afternoon at a resort located in central Maldives. Authorities have yet to reveal the name of the resort.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the tourist was deceased prior to being taken to ADK Hospital in the capital Malé City.
This is the second reported incidence of a tourist drowning in the country within the past 24 hours. In yesterday’s incident, a local man who saved a drowning tourist tragically passed away in a northern atoll resort.
Maldives is currently experiencing very rough weather as Hulhan’gu (southwest) monsoon – the rainy season has intensified. The monsoon typically starts in early May and lasts until November.
Owing to the ongoing bout of thunderstorms, strong winds and rough seas, authorities have been warning against sea travel unless absolutely necessary, and even then, with all safety measures in place.
