Opposition coalition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) has pledged to provide housing for all citizens of capital Male City.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) hub in Maafannu ward of Male, Solih stated that he had inspected the living conditions of the people of Male during his door-to-door campaign, and found that many people lived in destitute conditions.

Solih criticised the current administration's effort to provide social housing for Male citizens, calling it a failed policy that had ultimately provided housing to not those that needed it.

"In a government of our rule, the social housing policy will ensure that not a single citizen of Male is left without housing, God willing. For those that are destitute, until they can find a way or an income, [our] government will provide them with free housing," promised Solih.

The opposition candidate went on to pledge housing subsidies for people with good income and housing as well. He further promised to slash the down payment rates for flat buyers, vowing that housing loans would be provided for them when down payments have been settled.

Solih vowed that in his government, housing loans would have to be repaid at only a low monthly rate of MVR 5,000 with six percent interest, over a long period of time.

He noted that the capital city plays a vital role in the upcoming Presidential Election slated for September 23, and assured that the opposition coalition has policies on the development of Male.
