Fifth suspect arrested in connection with Nasheed attack

Significant developments have been made into the investigation on the attack on Majilis Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed and a fifth suspect is in custody, Police reveals on Sunday.

An IED attached to a motorbike outside Nasheed's residence exploded on May 6 as he was leaving his home.

Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Basheer and Superintendent of Police Hassan Shifau met with the press as today marks one month since the terror attack.

Police said new and significant evidence have been collected from various CCTV cameras all over Male'. However, due to the nature of the investigation, these information would not be disclosed to the media, they said.

The fifth suspect is among the10 individuals, suspected of participating in extremist activities, arrested in operations conducted by Police after the attack. Police are currently working to determine if the other arrested individuals have any connections to the attack on Nasheed.

Shifau said Australian Federal Police and an expert from United States of America (USA) were helping with forensic investigations. As the information collected thus far will be used to bring the perpetuators to justice, the Police had chosen not to disclose any.

They reiterated the main goal of the investigation is to find all parties involved in the attempted assassination of Nasheed; from those that participated in the act itself to the parties involved in planning, and those that may have funded this as well.

Shifau had said USA was aiding in determining who, if any, had funded this attack directly.

Police has only revealed the names of four people that has been arrested; Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed from Hiyaa, Vaavu Thinadhoo, Mujaaz Ahmed from MA. Feyruge, Male', Thahumeen Ahmed from Folheymaa, Gaafu Alifu Kondey, and Ahmed Fathih from Dhunfiniufaa, Laamu Gan.
