Maldives TT Team heads to India for South Asian Junior Championship

Copy edit: The Maldives national table tennis team is gearing up for the South Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championship (SAJCTTC) starting on Sunday, May 14 in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, India.

The SAJCTTC championship is scheduled to run from May 14 to May 17, with table tennis teams participating from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and the Maldives.

The junior male team representing the Maldives comprises Akhyar Ahmed Khalid, Mohamed Thaabin Shujau, Zeek Hassan Latheef, and Umeer Mohamed Muizzu. While Thaabin, Umeer, and Zeek have competed in the previous year’s championship, Akhyar is making his debut in the tournament.

The Maldives junior female team includes Fathimath Dheema Ali, who won the championship title at the Opatija Open Table Tennis Championship, Mishka Mohamed Ibrahim, Malaak Binth Muizzu, and Aishath Zara Shahil. All three players had participated in last year's championship.

The male cadet team consists of Umeer, Aun Ibrahim Latheef, and Mohamed Zaim Ahmed while the female cadet team includes Mishka, Zara, and Aishath Alsa Nafiz.

The Maldivian table tennis team is being coached by Sri Lanka's Aashan Ashwidha, with senior player Mohamed Munsif joining as manager. Ali Rasheed, President of the Maldives TT Association, will be an official delegate of the team, and Maldives TT umpire Mohamed Yamin will serve as an official in the tournament, marking his seventh international appearance as an umpire.

Dheema, Akhyar, Zeek, and Thaabin from the Maldivian TT team will travel directly to India from Croatia, where they have been undergoing training for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) scheduled to be held in Madagascar in August.

While Dheema took the junior champion title at the Opatija Open TT Championship, Akhyar advanced to quarter finals and Zeek advanced to the second stage in the tournament.
