Minister Zameer meets US Secretary Blinken, holds discussions on strengthening relations

Foreign Minister, Zameer has met with the US Secretary, Blinken during his official visit to the US and also met the Administrator of USAID, Power. These meetings saw several discussions held on improving the economy and strengthening diplomatic ties.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer has met the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken during his official visit to the United States. The meeting saw several discussion held on strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The Minister departed on his official visit to the US on June 23, accompanied by a delegation of senior government officials, including Ambassador of Maldives to the United States of America, Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Secretary, Bilateral, Dr Hala Hameed, Senior Undersecretary, Hassan Hussain Shihab and Second Secretary, Ibrahim Haail.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the discussions between the Minister and the Secretary had centered on deepening the relations between the Maldives and the United States including defense, security cooperation, strengthening democracy, committing to economic growth and mitigating climate change.

The meeting held in Washington D.C had also shed light on the importance of maintaining a liberal international order and reaffirmed the commitment to establish maritime and regional stability as well as sustaining peace. They had also explored expansion of avenues in order to further deepen relations between the two countries, said the Ministry.

The Ministry stated that Blinken had acknowledged Maldives' strong leadership at an international scale to mitigate climate change and advocate for environmental sustainability.

Minister Zameer had also recalled the importance of educational opportunities offered to Maldivian student by the United States during the meeting, said the Ministry. He had highlighted the need to establish an easier visa system for Maldivians which will in turn, promote cultural exchange, tourism and also strengthen business relations between the two countries.

Zameer had also convened with the Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power during his trip to Washington. The two deliberated on various themes related to economical advancements and protecting the environment in addition to consolidating Maldivian associations with the agency's assistance.

During his visit to Washington D.C., Minister Zameer is also scheduled to partake in an interactive discussion at the Council of Foreign Relations, wherein afterwards, he will engage with the Maldivian community residing in Washington D.C., according to the Ministry.

The Minister will next visit New York where he is scheduled to meet with with the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the UN, Li Junhua.

The Minister will also meet with tour operators and travel advisors based in New York and will convene with the Maldivian community in New York before ending the visit.

Minister Zameer is set to conclude his official trip to the United States on June 27.
