Lightning detection system installed in Maldives

A system to detect and collect information on thunder and lightning in real time was installed in the Maldives on Saturday.

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, in collaboration with Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) and the Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has installed the first lightning detection system in the Maldives.

Velana International Airport in Hulhulé and Gan International Airport in Addu City have both installed long-range lightning detection equipment to commence the new system.

The Ministry said that real-time detection of lightning and thunderstorms in the Maldives and its surrounding regions will be achieved once the connection is established with the regional network. Efforts are currently underway to install short-range lightning detection systems as well.

The Ministry further highlighted that once the lightning detection system is set up, it will be able to distinguish and observe the various stages of lightning and thunder in real time. Additionally, it will identify and predict the movement and direction of storms associated with lightning, thereby increasing the accuracy of forecasts and early warnings.

The accuracy of weather alerts and forecasts issued in accordance with International Civil Aviation and Maldives Civil Aviation regulations for air traffic safety and security will also see a significant improvement, added the Ministry.

Electrical, electronic, and communication devices typically sustain significant damage due to lightning and thunderstorms. Several instances of serious damage to property and loss of life have also been observed, posing dangers to the safety and security of air and sea travel.
