Opposition coalition has claimed that 17,000 of the total 24,000 re-registry forms for the upcoming Presidential Election, were submitted through the coalition.

Whilst ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is yet to submit forms for re-registration via the party to the Elections Commission (EC), main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s deputy chairperson Ali Niyaz has alleged that PPM will obstruct several voters of their rights.

Speaking at a press conference at Salt restaurant, Niyaz stated that 90 percent of the complaints received to the coalition hotline was over PPM’s failure to submit re-registry forms to EC.

“The forms submitted by the coalition were from our focal points. The [17,000] forms were not submitted by civil servants or company workers,” said Niyaz.

MDP had earlier filed complaints to the police over alleged foul play involved in the re-registry process by PPM.

Niyaz revealed that EC had not handed over original submission slips for over 2,000 forms to the coalition, adding that the coalition had earlier requested for the slips.

Niyaz further alleged that Police will reject legitimate forms submitted by the opposition coalition after fingerprint verification.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's faction, Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM)’s leading member Aminath Nadhira also stated that several voters were registered at locations that were not requested for in the re-registry forms.

Nadhira also expressed that whilst the opposition coalition has yet submitted 17,000 re-registry forms, the coalition aims to submit over 65,000 re-registry forms prior to the upcoming elections.

The deadline for re-registration is August 12.

A total of 263,000 eligible voters are in the voter’s registry publicised by EC for the upcoming election slated for September 23. According to local news media ‘Mihaaru’, 26 percent (70,000 people) of the total eligible voters are expected to re-register prior to the upcoming presidential election.

EC will be placing a total of 490 ballot boxes for the upcoming presidential elections slated for September 23.
