The Elections Commission (EC) has denied any negligence on its part in the leak of the list of members for The Democrats, a newly formed political party.
In a press release, the EC stated that no member or employee of the commission was involved in such an act.
The EC urged the public to refrain from making statements that could undermine confidence in the commission, especially as the upcoming presidential election approaches.
"The Democrats", formed by members of the "Fikuregge Dhirun," movement started initially as a faction of MDP led by former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed after he faced defeat in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s presidential primary.
The Democrats filed a complaint with the EC and the Maldives Police Service after the leaked list was unofficially circulated. The party alleged that the list was leaked from within the EC.
The Democrats have also alleged that supporters of the government have been calling members of the new party in an attempt to intimidate them.
The Democrats, consisting of many supporters of Speaker Nasheed, submitted 3,500 membership forms to the EC on Thursday to register as a political party.
