Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail affirmed on Wednesday that their presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, will secure a second term in office and requested MDP's President Mohamed Nasheed to not alienate himself from the party and work alongside them.

Speaking after MDP's discussion meeting with the Adhaalath Party and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) to form a coalition for the September 9 presidential election, Fayyaz said MDP would win a second term even if Nasheed did not support them.

He said this was the way to maintain the peace, the democracy, and the good governance established in the Maldives under MDP's leadership.

"So, I will ask President Nasheed and others in our party to join us in this endeavour. Don't be left out. Don't try to separate, Fayyaz had said in Dhivehi to the media, along with the president.

"Some peace can be found for our differences. You may not be able to achieve everything everyone wants. Two people can't rule at the same time. Therefore, we need to find a way forward for the country and its people."

Fayyaz said he did not intend to take action against Nasheed even after he started working separately from the party following the primary election, which he was not satisfied with.

When asked by a reporter if they could win the election without Nasheed's support, Fayyaz said, "We very much want President Nasheed's support."

"We really want it, however even if we don't get it, God willing, we will succeed. We want to win the election with President Nasheed by our side," Fayyaz said.

When asked if Nasheed's attempt to form a separate parliamentary group was a violation of the party's basic rules and whether action would be taken against him, Fayyaz said, MDP is a party that allows its members to express their feelings.

He said the party was functioning well and that it would not be shaken up by any issue.

If there is a situation where action has to be taken, Fayyaz said the party will not hesitate to do so.
